Farewell!

This will be my farewell post. Today is the day my blog is due! Hallelujah! This blog has been a good experience for me. Its something i am glad i know how to do now. So for the people who have been following me, if any, i thank you. This problem does mean a lot to me. There are not many places left in the world that are as beautiful and untouched as ANWR is. Many people and animals could lose their homes if there was to be drilling in ANWR but hopefully this blog got you thinking about the future. Electric cars are the future. We need them for so many different reasons and it would definitely help out the ANWR situation a lot. So please, always keep this issue in your mind. We do not want any more oil spills to happen like BP and Exxon Valdeez. If we were to drill, it is a huge possibility. Let us keep our world as beautiful as we can and not drill in ANWR! Again, thank you for those who have followed me on this important issue! To learn more about this issue and how to help click this link.

Oil Spill

I am sure everyone has heard about the disastrous oil spill that happened in the Gulf of Mexico. This spill is even worse than the Exxon Valdez! BP was the oil company that caused the spill...BP is using chemicals to break up the oil but people are figuring out that this could cause many environmental problems. "On Thursday BP began using the chemical compounds to dissolve the crude oil, both on the surface and deep below, deploying an estimated 100,000 gallons. Dispersing the oil is considered one of the best ways to protect birds and keep the slick from making landfall. But the dispersants contain harmful toxins of their own and can concentrate leftover oil toxins in the water, where they can kill fish and migrate great distances". BP has bought pretty much the entire supply of this dispersant and it could actually run out. Then what would they do? This chemical they are using is known to cause headaches, puking, and problems with reproduction. People say it could have a worse affect than the actual oil! Stuff like this makes me so sad. This is causing many fisherman who get there money from the fish they catch to not make any money..Now, this is the same thing they would be doing in ANWR..why would we want to risk the beautiful land and rare species of this area?

People of ANWR: Inupiat Eskimos

There is also another group of people who live here called the Inupiat Eskimos. The Inupiat Eskimos that live in ANWR hunt the whales, musk oxen, and other animals that also live there. If we were to drill, this could possibly cause these animals to relocate and for the Eskimos to change their ways as well as the way they have been living for many years. These people may not like huge oil drills in their front yards. So for those people who do not care so much about animals, this will be hurting humans too.

People of ANWR:Gwich'in Indians

The Gwich'in Indians live in 15 different villages that span from ANWR all the way to Canada. They depend on the Porcupine Caribou that migrate there to breed. If we did drill in ANWR, it would disrupt the Caribou and may cause them to go somewhere else to breed. The Gwich’ins are very traditional people and would be forced to change their ways if this were to happen. They are the most talkative about the drilling in ANWR. In 1988, eight Gwich'in elders from Alaska and Canada representing 15 primarily Canadian villages, unanimously voted to oppose ANWR development. They say that drilling in ANWR will harm the Caribou that breed there. There are people here too!

WOW!

I really can not believe that I am done with my freshman year in college! Its a really good feeling. When i started this year, I was an education major. I realized that being a teacher is more work than it worth so i changed my major to Recreation. I want to be an event planner. I am planning on trying to intern with an event planner in Savannah next Summer. If anyone has any suggestions please let me know! But this Summer could not come faster! This year flew by but its time for it to be over.

Drillling won't lower gas prices!

Drilling in ANWR will not lower gas prices! Many people think it will but it will not! Increased demand is what is making gas prices high. The DOE predicts that between 2010 and 2015 oil demand will increase by over 7% and 30% by 2030. The US only has 3% of oil supply here so tapping into ANWR wouldn't even make a difference at all! Really the only way to reduce fuel prices is to reduce our dependence of oil, like if we used electric cars!! It would also improve our environment.

ANWR

ANWR is a beautiful piece of land. It is the located near the Beaufort Sea in the Northeastern corner of Alaska. It is surprisingly large but many people say this is the reason we could drill here. But no, this land is filled with animals that come here to calf, birds nest here, animals den here, and they breed here; and only here! We do not want to mess this up. We could lose many animals species if we drilled. ANWR is untouched with beautiful trees, tundra, mountains, and even beaches! Lets keep ANWR beautiful. You may not find such diverse, beautiful land, and population of animals anywhere else!

FINALS!

Finals are going to be the death of me. Actually this blog kind of helps me out..its kind of relaxing to come on here and just type about stuff i feel strongly about. I have three finals next week..I'm not 100% ready for any of them...its a little stressful to say the least. Next year i will know not to procrastinate..but you live and you learn.

Bad Idea

There are so many problems in our world today. I think that the drilling in ANWR is definitely one of them and I am sure that someone that is reading this agrees with me. Although this drilling has not actually happened, it definitely something that is talked about a lot in the news and in politics. Drilling here could really harm the environment, as a stated in previous posts. Even if we did drill, there would only be MAYBE a years worth of oil present. Drilling could also harm many animals and peoples homes, if you did not already know that by now..

The Electric Car

So the partial solution to this huge problem is using electric cars. Granted this will not solve this entire problem, it could help. By driving electric cars, you do not need to use any source of fuel which means we would not need to drill for oil, for the use in cars anyway. Using electric cars wouldn't only help the problems about drilling in ANWR. It would be so much better on the environment. We may not all care so much about ANWR but we sure as hell should care about the environment. After all, it is helping us live and breathe...

History Repeats Itself

So this is not really the top on my priority list on this beautiful weekend but it has to get done. I have heard recently about oil spills that have happened in the gulf of Mexico. This oil spill has been compared to the Exxon Valdez that happened in the Prince William Sound in Alaska. This has pretty much wrecked the tourist and seafood industries in Mexico. The beautiful wildlife is also greatly threatened here. When the Exxon Valdez hit Alaska 21 years ago, it was devastating. This area of Alaska still isn't fully recovered. They are predicting the area when the oil spill happened in Mexico still wont be recovered in 100 years! President Obama will be visiting there soon. Hopefully this will change many peoples minds about drilling in Alaska. This same thing could and probably would happen there is there was drilling.

Not the first time!

This is not the first time that the environment has been sacrificed for wealth. Think about the rain forest for a second... The rain forest has been destroyed due to logging, farming, colonization, and more! We all know that this is now a HUGE problem and now we are trying to fix it. I know that everyone has seen ads and commercials about saving the rain forest right? Why would we want to cause the same problem in ANWR? Lets just save ourselves the trouble of trying to go back and fix our mistakes and just not even do it in the first place!

No Drilling!

So we all now know how beautiful ANWR is but you may not know that the ecosystem is very fragile there. ANWR is extremely long and skinny and this gives animals that live there not very many alternate places to live. Also, The climate is very harsh and if we messed something up with the animals there, the climate would give them virtually no time to recover. And wait a second.. aren't we trying to become more environmentally friendly anyway? Why not start here? We don't want to lose sight of this important thing we are trying to achieve here. ANWR is "untouched" so lets keep it that way!

People in ANWR

Like a said a couple of days ago, there are also people in ANWR. I am sure a lot of people think ANWR is only inhabited by animals, i did when i first heard about this issue, but there is not. the two main groups of people are the Inupiat Eskimos and the Gwich'in Indians. The Indians live in 15 different villages that span from ANWR all the way to Canada. they depend on the Caribou that come to ANWR to breed, without these caribou, the Indians would be in trouble because they are very traditional people who would not want to change their ways. The Eskimos hunt the whale, oxen, and other animals that could relocate it there was drilling here. Both of these groups of people have lived here for many many years and we would not want to force them to change their ways just to get MAYBE a years worth of oil. So for those of you who do not care that much about hurting the animals, this could be hurting people too!

Watch this movie!

Who killed the Electric car is a great movie. Its actually kind of sad. The movie talks about what actually happened to the electric car and why it did not catch on. It talks about who was behind the "death" of this car. You might be surprised!

A little background

This post is going to talk about the background of ANWR. ANWR stands for the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. It is a beautiful "untouched" piece of land in the northeastern corner of Alaska. ANWR is 19 million acres large. It consists of tall spruce trees, birch trees, tundra, mountains, and beaches. The part in ANWR that is being looked at for drilling is 1.5 acres large and is home to many animals and people. You may not find such beautiful surroundings anywhere else.

EV commercials!

So I am loving the fact that i have seen not one but two electric car commercials today. This is the direction our world needs to be going in. The first commercial i saw was for the Chevy Volt and the second was for the Nissan Leaf. Personally I like the Nissan better and I plan to get one when I need a new car. this is the main soultion that i am focusinf one when it comes to ANWR. We will not need to drill if we are not even using any oil!

Animals in ANWR

So i wanted to tell you about all the different animals there are in ANWR. There are polar bears, caribou, birds, fish, moose, whales, wolves and soo many other things! The caribou that live here are called porcupine caribou and ONLY breed here. If people were to mess this land up, they could actually become extinct. Polar bears make their dens here and many species of birds make thier nests here in the Spring and Summer. So please, DO NOT DRILL IN ANWR! i really do not want to see any more sad animal commercials!!!!
I hate those really sad animal commercials....they should have one about what would happen if people drilled in ANWR....

Monday, April 5, 2010

Hello! Sorry its been soo long since my last post. I have been so busy with all my classes that i kind of forgot :( But i remembered today! So to update i am writing this to let everyone know about ANWR, The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. This beautiful piece of land is being speculated for drilling of oil. First of all, I thought we were trying to get more involved in alternative energy sources and more fuel efficient. This is not going to help that. Second of all, ANWR is beautiful and many animals only live and breed here. The main thing i will be talking about is one of the many solutions to this speculated problem- The Electric Car.
